It’s summer here in Texas. The kids are out of school, people are taking vacations, and the outdoors are just ready to be experienced. How about saving some money and staying at home for the summer? Here are some ways to amp up your backyard for some summer fun!

1. Pool – This is obviously the number one place to spend time in the summer. The kids will love splashing in the water and the parents can enjoy a relaxing evening floating under the stars. A pool can boost your property value and on the long term can provide some cheap summer entertainment!

2. Patio – How old is your home? Ten years? Twenty? It may be time for a new patio! Replace old metal coverings with wooden ones for a more contemporary look and add a built in grill! So, one referral equals $25, two referrals equals $50, up to as many as you can get! All your friends have to do is give your name when they sign up. It gets better though. If you refer at least 5 people you will be eligible for our referral contest. The person who refers the most people will win their 2013 lawn mowing for FREE! That’s right, free lawn care for a year. You can close your mouth now. Second prize is an Apple iPad and third is an additional $250 credit. OFFICIAL RULES OF THE REFERRAL SWEEPSTAKES:

Weeds: We Have Found a Cure.

Yard work would not be yard work without taking care of weeds. With spring on its way out, and summer on its way in, it is no doubt that our North Texas lawns are being attacked by varying types of weeds. They kill off our petunias, they eat up our St. Augustine grass, and no matter how hard we try, they always come back!

Weeds rob your plants and grass of essential nutrients and water, not to mention they are unsightly. As we Texans know, water becomes scarce in the summer, so it is all the more important that the water we do have is being used on the right plants. Grassy and broadleaf weeds are the most common in the North Texas area. Grassy weeds can result in a lumpy, thinned out lawn that needs a lot of mowing. Broadleaf weeds can stunt the growth of the grasses you actually want in your yard, as well as increase the need for yard maintenance.

While regular mowing and fertilizing of the good plants will help keep the weeds at bay, it will not eradicate them completely. There are weed killers in stores, but without the proper knowledge of the chemicals in the herbicides and what types of plants they kill, you could end up finishing off your roses instead of the crabgrass.
